Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Something about a debt, a key, a chest, a sea monster, the East India Company and – oh look, swordfight! It’s best to remain unconcerned with deciphering the plot in order to enjoy this visually stunning film. The standard twists have been deployed to keep the storyline afloat for two sequels with mixed effect (love triangle: yawn). But the stage has been capably set for Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, which releases this year. A little less dramatic tension to water down the swashbuckle this time, please. B.

“B”, really? I found the entire thing to just be muddled. Visual effects can only carry you so far, and it seemed like this movie tried too hard to wow you with effects than with any semblence of an actual, plausible storyline… Also seemed like it was only one big advert for the third movie, since nothing of any real substance took place in this film…

I really dug the effects and the fight scenes; from a pure popcorn movie perspective, I was entertained. And the effects didn’t seem gratuitous or overblown. But I agree, lots of story blah-ness. At the end, I wondered why they wanted to set off on POC3. But I’ll still watch it.

I’m gonna have to go with Drew on this one, Weeks. When you make the choice to sit down to watch a movie called “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and said movie has done no advertising to try to convince you it has a plot line (the commercials were all basically “come watch Johnny Depp be goofy as Jack Sparrow…again”), you’ve already given up your right to complain about about there not being a plot line.

I guess I just got tired of watching the same thing happen again and again – sort of like the Matrix sequels… “oh, look, they’re fighting again and, yup, there’s the ‘freeze time/bullet time’ effect…” I wasn’t expecting something spectacular, but based on the overwhelming popularity, my expectations were higher than they should have been.

I agree on the slow-motion bullet. That was the one moment I felt they were trying too hard.

  • Mom

OK – I liked it. Your sister and I watched it one night until niece Ella loudly proclaimed her needs. The movie is funny and campy, and campy gives a movie lots of flexibility. Lighten up you guys.

If we lighten up, what will we argue about?

  • Weeks

Seriously… Why else read Drew’s blog if we can’t mix it up every now and then?

    Weeks, the reasons are innumerable.
