Casino Royale

Jul 19, 2007

Note to director Martin Campbell and screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis: you had me at parkour. The Bond franchise gets a complete overhaul with this retelling of 007′s first mission, and with top-notch results. The silliness of the recent Bond flicks has vanished; Daniel Craig plays the British spy as slick, rough and damaged. Crackling dialogue, high stakes poker and plenty of inventive combat scenes makes Casino Royale the best action movie I’ve seen this year. A.

I liked it, too, but I have to say... his one gadget is a heart defibrillator? Modernizing the franchise is all well and good, but Bond needs his gadgets! Oh, and on a related note -- I do miss 'Q', silly or not.
  • I agree, some of the love scenes were a bit over the top, but then things would blow up and he'd have machete fights in stairwells, which made up for it.

What about the opening scenes with Sebastian Foucault (I think) doing his free running or free jumping, whatever it's called....my hands were sweating as he was jumping between cranes. (Has Jason made you watch his Jump London DVD?) I wasn't sure if I could believe Bond as capable of being so 'in luv' but I did like Mr Craig.
